Humanities
At Vale of Evesham School, we aim to give all our students a window to understand the world in which we all live.
In the semi-formal curriculum it is referred to “My Place in the world” where they are taught by a multi sensory and skill based approach linked to a creative curriculum. On the Formal curriculum it is referred to as “Humanities” where an adapted national curriculum is taught. The subject areas incorporate History, Geography, RE. In High School Formal Curriculum also incorporates Citizenship. Within our High school provision we do not offer MFL, as pupils voted to undertake Humanities studies instead.
The study of History provides opportunities for the pupils to experience and, where appropriate, to develop some understanding of events and people of different times and places. It enriches the curriculum by offering the pupils to be actively involved in exploring the world around them. This is achieved through exploring and handling artefacts, visiting museums, stories, books, photos and through practical activities linked to particular topics.
The study of Geography allows the pupils to explore, experience and develop an understanding of such areas as their local environment, e.g. their school, local shops, the weather, jobs, water, maps, directions and exploring the differences between the country and the town. Offering opportunities to use location knowledge, place knowledge, human and physical and Geographical Skills and fieldwork.
The Study of RE provides opportunities to cover festivals and age and stage appropriate topics. It covers core knowledge and understanding of the beliefs and practices of the religions and world views. One unit per term will be taught alongside festivals as and when appropriate. It encourages pupils to become confident in their own beliefs and values that they can respect the religious and cultural differences of others, and contribute to a cohesive and compassionate society. Our curriculum helps pupils to make sense of beliefs, make connections, and understanding the impact of different beliefs. We follow the Worcestershire Agreed Local Syllabus for RE and in line with this we as a special school ensure that every pupil receives RE ‘as far as is practicable’ and meet the required hours per year of taught RE.
