Intent

At Vale of Evesham School we aim to produce competent, confident, independent learners who are provided with the appropriate mathematical skills, understanding and experiences for their future.  Our aim is to lay a broad and secure foundation to enable our learners to apply their maths skills in problem-solving situations encountered every day, whilst making Mathematics enjoyable.  Wherever you look in the world there is maths and we aim to equip students with the knowledge and, more importantly, the skills to fully participate in our society.

It is known as Thinking skills and Numeracy on the Semi-formal pathway and Maths on the Formal Pathway.

Implementation

Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) – The Area of development, Mathematics is taught as part of Thinking skills. Thinking skills are planned for as part of child led play activities within the continuous provision. Alongside this, adult led sessions will be delivered through a variety of whole class, small group activities and 1:1 sessions using a workbox system. Multi-sensory learning, play and real objects as well as songs and stories provide the children with opportunities to develop early thinking and cognition skills, play skills as well as early number and shape space and measure concepts.

First school Semi-formal pupils receive 30 minute Thinking skills and Numeracy sessions 3-4 times a week. It is taught through a skills based curriculum with a multi-sensory approach.  We ensure pupils are offered the skills to access the concrete building blocks to progress to more abstract thinking as they move through the school.

Middle and High School following semi-formal curriculum receive 3 hrs of Maths teaching per week.  They will explore Numeracy and Thinking skills sessions where they build on the previous skills where they re-visit the same topics but develop and deepen their knowledge and understanding.

Middle and High School pupils following a Formal curriculum will receive 3 hours of Maths lessons per week.  They follow an adapted national curriculum where they meet the more abstract concepts in maths Mathematical concepts will also be taught and reinforced in other curriculum areas, such as Science and PE.

Impact

It is our purpose in teaching mathematics, to:

  • Encourage confidence, enjoyment and challenge to all students in the learning of mathematics irrespective of prior attainment;
  • Provide a curriculum that builds on prior knowledge and consolidates previous work, in order to improve long term recall of key information and processes;
  • Develop students’ ability to solve problems in a variety of contexts, building their confidence to tackle unfamiliar problems in new situations;
  • Develop an understanding of the language and notation associated with mathematics, enabling them to think mathematically and communicate mathematically in a subject that has extensive real life applications;
  • Make students aware of the use of mathematics in everyday life and to build awareness and skills related to financial matters that will be important to them as they develop into young adults.
